An Ambitious Year
It’s the third week of 2018 and I don’t know about you but I’m still feeling full of determination. I feel like I always start the new year like this and somewhere (usually about now) I get lost and the good intentions seem to wither away. Of course I have days where self doubt creeps in but this year I’m not letting doubts get in the way. It is pretty hard getting back into the swing of things after a nice break over Christmas but now I have to get my backside into gear. If you’ve read my blog before you’ll know that I am currently on a career break. A decision that wasn’t taken lightly. I trained long and hard for my career as a midwife but after having my second child and the oldest starting school the hours and the commute just didn’t work with having kids. Lack of childcare, flexible working, a partner who works long hours in varying locations and no help from family meant that I needed to be the one to make changes to fit around my children.
I’ve been off work now for 2 years (1 year maternity leave and 1 year career break). I love being at home and not having to worry about how we can manage childcare, sickness and holidays. I love being able to go to school events without worrying about asking for shift swaps or time off. However, I do miss earning my own income. I needed a plan. I needed something that would work around school. Something that would work for my family and for me.
With a little determination and a lot of effort I completed and passed a course in Digital Marketing with Udacity at the end of December. I have a few more things I need to do (like organise myself) before I can start to look for work. I need to be focused and determined if I’m going to make this work. I want to make this work and I have to make this work. I’m a big believer in making things happen. If you sit back and watch the world go by it will do just that – go by! Opportunities are out there, but you have to go and find them.
In an effort to stay focused I’ve joined two fabulous groups. Firstly We Blog North with the lovely Holly Wood. So far I’ve only been to one meet up but it was so inspiring I joined up with a new venture called the Mothership with Helen (Guilty Mother’s Club) and Anna (Anna Hardy Photography). WeBlog have two more meet ups planned in Manchester so hopefully I can make at least one of them.
The Mothership kicked off this month so I’m very eager to see what’s in store. The idea is to get a bunch a working mum’s together in a community and help each other out. Hopefully by compiling our skills, support and enthusiasm we can work together to build strong businesses.
This year will be full of changes but changes for the better. I’m moving forward. As Martin Luther King says:
“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”
